Thursday 25th of January 2007

The first day of the meeting began with a lunch at the Grand hotel Sofia where the meeting was held.

Discussions on the Gender Equality indicators.

Kjartan introduced the topics he felt were necessary to discuss on the meeting. He proposed the following issues to be covered:

  • Selection of indicators to be used

  • Selection of municipalities (national or sub-national level)

  • Selection of method for data collection

  • Timeframe for the data collection

  • Organization of the work ahead

Then Kjartan introduced a schedule for the discussion and work during the two days. His proposal was to use the first day to discuss the overall frame for the selection of indicators and to discuss some concrete ideas for specific indicators as well as issues related to the choice of indicators. The latter day would be used to try to arrive at a disicion on which indicators to use and to discuss the organisation of the work ahead.

Kjartan then proposed a basic line of approach for the selection of indicators and called for discussion on three different approaches:

  1. 1. Use EU policy areas

  2. Develop a framework for this specific project

  3. A combination of both

Kjartan then presented the EU policy areas on gender equality as well as ideas which the teams in Finland, Norway and Bulgaria had sent before the meeting. The team from Greece presented some ideas also which they had prepared for the meeting. This initated a lively and fruitful discussion and therefore the group decided to postpone an overall discussion on the practicalities of the project and continue the discussion of indicators until dinner time.

Dinner and informal meeting

The program allowed for only a short break before discussions could be continued more informally over dinner which took place at the restaurant vodenitzata or the watermill. There the group enjoyed traditional Bulgarian cuisine accompanied by folksongs and dancing.

All then went to bed after a long but efficient day.

Friday 26th of January

Discussing on Gender equality indicator continued

The day started where the group ended the night before with discussion on the gender equality indicators. Kjartan introduced a proposal for indicators based on the previous days’ discussions. This was followed by a lively and good discussion where all members of the group participated and made valuable suggestions.

It was then decided to go quickly through the list of indicators which Kjartan had put together from the previous days’ discussion and aim at getting as many ideas as possible on the table which would then be made into a shorter list of indicators to be worked on further. This discussion was broken up by a short to visit the nearby museum of archaeology. But then the group went back to the hotel and carried on with the morning discussion in smaller groups which discussed various parts of the original list.

After the Lunch the group looked at the Project website and Dissemination of results

Jóna showed the first version of the website and asked the teams from each country to go over the material already on the website and make corrections if needed. Also each team was asked to send 3-5 pictures to present at the website.

Next on the agenda was the National Seminar which was well advertised by the Bulgarian team and attracted over thirty politicians and officials from the municipal level. May Endresen Norway gave a lecture on Gender Equality in Norway; conciliation between paid work and family life. Sinikka Mikola from Finland gave a lecture on Gender Equality in Finnish Municipalities and finally Kjartan Ólafsson, Iceland finished the open seminar with a lecture which he has called The future heaven of gender equality?

After the walk the groups from Iceland and Finland had a meeting over dinner to discuss a draft for a program for the proposed meeting in Finland from June 14th to June 16th.
